Spurrier vows to improve running game (AP)
Steve Spurrier hasn't gotten over the way last season ended and vows to improve in all areas this year, including South Carolina's last-place running game. The Gamecocks have been at the bottom in Southeastern Conference in rushing the past three years, although Spurrier says it's unfair to tag that failure all on his runners.

Ex-Okla. State star Fenimore dies at 84 (AP)
Bob Fenimore, a two-time All-American who became the top pick in the 1947 NFL draft, died Wednesday in Stillwater after a fight with cancer. He was 84. Fenimore was a star on offense and defense for Oklahoma A&M in the 1940s, highlighted by his 1945 season when he led the nation in total offense and rushing, finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting and led the Aggies to a perfect 9-0 season.

Pac-10 to soon become Pac-12 (AP)
For years people in the Pac-10 -- from players to fans -- have complained about a lack of recognition and a so-called East Coast bias that caused the conference to be under-appreciated nationally. Commissioner Larry Scott, who grew up in New York on Long Island, decided that instead of complaining it was time for the league to do something about it.

Iowa St.'s Sims faces misdemeanor charge (AP)
Iowa State defensive back David Sims has been charged with unauthorized use of a credit card. The aggravated misdemeanor charge was filed Tuesday by the Story County Attorney's Office. Sims is due in court Aug. 2. Cyclones coach Paul Rhoads issued a statement saying Sims will face disciplinary action internally.
